How to Design Patterns: Step 12 - Where to List Your Crochet & Knit Patterns

ree

So you’ve written a pattern, taken great photos, and now it’s time to list it. But where? There are a lot of platforms out there for pattern listings, and they each come with their own pros, cons, and fees.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the most popular platforms for listing your patterns, what makes each one unique, and my personal recommendation for getting started. Plus, I’ll share what to include in your listing descriptions so your pattern is ready to shine ✨

📍 Where Can You List Patterns?

Here's a breakdown of the most common platforms for crochet and knit pattern designers:

  • Your Own Website (Wix example)

    ✅ Full control over branding

✅ Build your customer list & email marketing

✅ Can monetize with ads over time

⚠ Requires setup & ongoing maintenance

💸 Cost: $16–30/month for Wix, plus payment processing fees

If you’re serious about building a business, then your own website is a long-term win. You get full creative control and can start growing your own audience instead of relying on someone else’s platform.

  • Ravelry

✅ Great search + filtering (especially for garment designs)

✅ Trusted by many in the fiber community

    ⚠ Limited customization

⚠ Some people no longer use it

💸 Cost: Free until you hit $30/month in sales, then 3.5% fee

Ravelry is the most professional, pattern-focused platform and a great place to start. It helps people find your patterns based on yarn weight, size, skill level, and more.

  • Etsy

✅ Built-in traffic (great for discovery)

✅ Reaches casual buyers who aren’t on Ravelry

    ⚠ High fees

⚠ Buyers often don’t read the listing details

⚠ Bad reviews affect your visibility

💸 Cost: 6.5% transaction fee + $0.20 per listing + payment processing fees

Etsy isn’t my favorite, but it does bring in more eyes. Just be prepared to deal with messages from buyers who didn’t fully read the description or who are brand-new to digital patterns.

  • Ribblr

✅ Interactive patterns with clean UI

    ✅ Beginner-friendly experience

    ⚠ Smaller audience

    ⚠ You can’t upload a traditional PDF

    💸 Cost: 4% + payment processing fees

Ribblr is great if you want a more interactive experience for customers. It's still growing, but it's user-friendly and fun to explore!

  • Kofi

✅ Great for small digital shops, tips from customers, and casual support

    ✅ Super easy setup

⚠ Not searchable like Etsy or Ravelry

⚠ No built-in audience looking for patterns

💸 Cost: 5% service fee + payment processing

Kofi is great for building a casual shop alongside your main platforms, especially if you're active on social media.

  • LoveCrafts

✅ Connects yarn & pattern buyers in one place

    ✅ International reach

    ✅ Easily transfer Ravelry patterns

⚠ Interface is a bit clunky

⚠ High fees & little customization

    💸 Cost: 5% monthly + 4% per sale + $0.35 per pattern sold

If you want more visibility, LoveCrafts can be a good addition. Especially if you use Ravelry already, because you can easily transfer the pattern over. Just know it’s a bit awkward to use and lacks flexibility.

🧾 What Should Be in Your Pattern Listing?

Every good pattern listing needs the essentials. Here’s what I always include:

  • What it is (cardigan, blanket, etc.)

  • Sizing info

  • Materials (hooks/needles, yarn, etc.)

  • Gauge

  • Skill level

  • What’s included (PDF, photo tutorial, video, etc.)

I always start with a paragraph that’s fun, descriptive, and SEO-friendly — and then follow with bullet points for quick reading.

🛠 My Listing Strategy

I personally list every pattern on all platforms except Ribblr if the pattern isn’t compatible (like Mae to Measure). If you’re just starting out, though, I recommend starting with:

  • Ravelry – for search visibility

  • Your own website – for long-term brand building

This combo gives you professionalism, control, and credibility right out of the gate, without relying only on social platforms.

There’s no perfect platform, just the ones that make sense for you right now. Start small, stay consistent, and don’t stress about being on every platform at once. Just make sure your patterns are easy to find, easy to understand, and easy to buy!✨
